In this installment, Jean McClure, who with her husband Pastor Don McClure started Calvary Way ministries, teaches the women who attended the conference. Teaching on Psalm 46, she encourages the women to be unafraid even in times like these, to continue to trust Jesus, and to stay in God’s Word. She also shared her enthusiasm for studying prophecy.

“I love Psalm 46,” shared Jean McClure. “I think it’s very appropriate for the times we are in. Haven’t you found that the Psalms are super-encouraging these days?” Jean and her husband Pastor Don McClure serve through their ministry, Calvary Way, traveling and speaking around the world with the same calling as the apostle Paul. She chose Psalm 46:5 as her main verse for this women’s teaching.

The Lord is in the midst of her. She shall not be moved. Psalm 46:5a

When Jean was a little girl, people were afraid of the Russians and communism. She worried about what would happen if the Russians invaded the U.S. and threatened to kill her parents unless she denied Jesus. What if she wasn’t strong enough? Her mom told her, “You purpose in your heart like [the prophet] Daniel, right now, and if the day should come, God will keep you.”

And then communism sort of disappeared and the Soviet Union fell. And lately, suddenly out of our universities and schools appeared communism again. “It’s satanic,” said Jean. “You think, How is this happening so fast in our school systems and in government and so many areas?” She remembers the fear she had as a little child, and her mother’s words come back to her. She remembers how she purposed in her heart to stay with Jesus. Jean stated that although Daniel and his friends were taken to a foreign land, God continued to use and bless them. And God will use us in our neighborhoods to show our peace in an unpeaceful world.

Last year, Jean was grateful to have toilet paper and food. “I remember being thankful every time we sat down. The more I praised [Jesus], the more peaceful and joyous I was. And [praise] is really a key to walking in the [Holy] Spirit, and to have the Lord calm your spirit and give you joy.”

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed. Psalm 46:1-2a

“‘A very present help’ means ‘right now,’” defined Jean. “I think of my devotions in the morning as a place to go for protection. … I think our world is going to get worse, that we are in the End Times.” As she looks at the Tribulation and the Great Tribulation, Jean follows the Pre-Tribulation Rapture belief because she doesn’t know why God would punish His children in the upcoming time of wrath coming on the earth. “I’m voting for the early Rapture,” Jean offered. “I would encourage you to have a lot more time in devotions than you do listening to the news.”

Recently, Jean noticed that people were shouting at others who were not wearing masks. She asked her son Michael, a Calvary Chapel pastor, why the people were so angry. “Mom, they’re afraid they’re going to die, and they don’t know where they’re going,” he expressed. Jean agreed, telling the women at the conference, “They don’t know if there’s a heaven or hell, or if they’ll just be obliterated into nothing. They’re terrified. And I had compassion for them. You can just pray for them—they need Jesus. They need you to love on them, minister to them, pray for them, even if they don’t know you are.”

Jean has been excited about seeing prophecies fulfilled. The Bible says that the whole world will hear the Gospel, and recently she saw Franklin Graham on worldwide news telling people how to be born again. Most of the world gets that channel, she added. When the two prophets are killed in Jerusalem and raised from the dead, the whole world will be able to see it on their cellphones, which are now everywhere, even in Third World countries. “It’s exciting. The Bible is more new than the news,” Jean declared.

“All this last year and a half, [this] has come to me—Just trust Jesus. Nothing happened to us that He didn’t know about. It has to go through His hands before it can touch you,” she counseled. Jean described her trip to see the Creation Museum, where a display of the universe amazed her. “How big is your God? With God, we need not fear, we can have peace. Teach it to your children.” She taught her grandkids 1 John 4:4b: He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Her son, Pastor Mike McClure of Calvary Christian Fellowship in San Jose, CA, kept his church open during the COVID-19 lockdowns declared by California governments. The church was fined millions of dollars. Jean described the court appearances and how Mike was not allowed to speak on numerous occasions. Finally, he was given time to tell why he had kept his church open. Talking for an hour, he told of people who were suicidal and others who had many troubles. He couldn’t leave people during a time like this, he said, nor wear a mask and stand six feet away when they needed consolation. Jean stated, “They did what they felt God told them to do. In whom do you put your trust?” She had prayed for this judge. Mike was kept from serving time in jail, but the fines were not dismissed, and lawsuits will continue.

Jean shared that the source history of Psalm 46 comes from King Hezekiah creating an underground tunnel so that water could flow from springs near Jerusalem to inside the city walls. She likened that to the Living Water of God, the Holy Spirit. Jean encouraged the ladies, “Draw from that hidden river, and pull that refreshing Water into your life and your heart. [He’s] going to flow out of you to everyone around you.”
